The effect of melanocortin action between brain regions on eating behavior

An imbalance in metabolism, specifically as directed by the brain, can result in disturbed eating behavior, which eventually becomes the basis of numerous disorders and diseases. However, studies have not fully understood the neuronal connections between brain regions which are responsible for motivation and decision making in eating behavior at the level of the potentially directly linked melanocortin system neurons. Further the role of the early nutritional environment in the development and function of these neurons is not known. Therefore, we are investigating the broad connection of the melanocortin system between specific brain regions in adult animals and animals exposed to maternal overnutrition using various novel methods on the mouse brain.
