The influence of intestinal hyperbilirubinemia on gut microbe-host interactions

Gilbert’s Syndrome, a benign polymorphism in the Ugt1a1 gene, which is responsible for the conjugation and excretion of bilirubin in the liver, leads to increased bilirubin levels in the serum and in the colon. Studies have shown that individuals with this polymorphism, have a decreased risk for inflammatory bowel diseases as well as an overall decreased risk to get (colon)cancer. The goal of this project is to investigate the effects of increased bilirubin levels on the gut microbiota as well as on different microbiota-driven processes in the colon and bilirubin-driven processes in the liver under the influence of colon cancer risk factors (diet, inflammation).
