SynBio4Flav - Synthetic microbial consortia-based platform for flavonoids production using synthetic biology
Flavonoids are secondary metabolites in plants that regulate oxidative stress and act as growth regulators. They are thus among the substances that protect us from non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Despite their enormous potential, flavonoids are currently quite immature in their industrial production. The EU-funded project is now addressing this issue by attempting to mimic natural production via complex physical and chemical pathways involving the transport of chemicals through plant compartments. Potentially, this could also produce flavonoids that do not occur naturally.
