Since its foundation, the DIfE has been a member of the Leibniz Association, which unites 97 independent research institutions. The members' orientations range from the natural sciences, engineering and environmental sciences to economics, spatial sciences, social sciences and the humanities.

In addition, the DIfE maintains strategic partnerships with other renowned research associations, communities and organizations. These are an important stimulus and driver for future collaborations, knowledge and technology transfer, interdisciplinary exchange, and scientific innovation.
