1 Master Thesis Position (m/f/d)

The German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke (DIfE) is a member of the Leibniz Association. The institute’s mission is to conduct experimental and clinical research in the field of nutrition and health, with the aim of understanding the molecular basis of nutrition-dependent diseases, and of developing new strategies for treatment and prevention.

The Department of Adipocyte Development and Nutrition (ADE) invites applications for

1 Master Thesis Position (m/f/d)

starting from January 2023.

Analysis of the effects of aging and metabolic diseases on the composition of the stem cell niche

In addition to the classic fat depots (the white and the brown fat) there is also a so-called ectopic fat storage. Ectopic fat cells have been implicated in a number of functional and metabolic disorders in a number of tissues. Ectopic fat cells arise from a population of specialized cells called mesenchymal stem or stromal cells (MSCs). It is assumed that MSCs increasingly undergo an adipogenic differentiation with old age and in this way may increasingly promote ectopic fatty cell formation thereby contributing to pathological processes and impaired regeneration. In addition to single-cell analysis, this master's thesis deals with the in vivo manipulation of the identified genes with the aim of improving health in old age and in metabolic disease states.

  • RNA isolation from cell samples
  • qPCR quantification of gene expression and use of relevant software (Office Suite, BioRad PrimePCR and Prism)
  • Cell culture and investigation of cell differentiation
  • Evaluation and analysis of results
