The German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke (DIfE) is a member of the Leibniz association. The institute’s mission is to conduct experimental and clinical research in the field of nutrition and health, with the aim of understanding the molecular basis of nutrition-dependent diseases, and of developing new strategies for treatment and prevention (Website: DIfE is a partner of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD).

We invite applications for the department Experimental Diabetology (Prof. Dr. Annette Schürmann) for

1 Doctoral Student (m/f/d)

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a metabolic disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia caused by impaired insulin secretion due to a loss of β-cell function and/or mass. Known risk factors are obesity, inactivity as well as genetic and epigenetic predisposition. The overall aim is to identify epigenetic signatures that are involved in T2D development and to evaluate whether distinct microRNA (miRNA) patterns can be used as markers for individual risk assessment.

Project description

Based on our previous study, we developed a prediction method to discriminate between diabetes-resistant (DR) and diabetes-prone (DP) mice and collected tissues before disease onset. So far, omics analyses of liver identified new miRNAs that associate with T2D.

The selected doctoral student will perform a deeper phenotypic characterization of our mouse model. In addition, a major task will be to conduct functional analyses of specific microRNAs, e. g. by performing in vitro experiments in cell lines to define miRNA target genes. Next, to elucidate the role of a designated miRNA in liver metabolism and type 2 diabetes, in vivo overexpression and /or downregulation of miRNA will be conducted in mice.

Skills and requirements

The advertised position is available initially for three years. The position will be paid according to the terms of the civil service collective bargaining act (TV-L 65 % of level E13).

The institute offers a vibrant and interactive research environment, state-of-the-art equipment and qualified training and enrolment in a local PhD program.
