Department of Epidemiology (EPI)

Project 3 : Determinants of health and age-related traits

Within the German cohort collaboration on determinants and consequences of weight gain in the adult population, the department has coordinated the activities and is developing a risk score for substantial gain in weight. The ongoing work on a risk score for weight gain has led to the development of a prediction model of weight gain in the EPIC Study, and in the German cohorts.

In DEDIPAC (Determinants of Diet and Physical Activity), the department coordinates the secondary data analysis on determinants of diet and is active in various fields of the coordinated action, including systematic reviews.

Aging is gaining increased attention, and the Potsdam EPIC Study is one of the few cohort studies in Germany that can refer to an older cohort population with a long history of already collected data. Thus, we used a project allowing us to readjust the EPIC studies in Germany, in terms of diet and other lifestyle variables, to collect aging-related data in a subgroup of 800 subjects. This includes physical activity, physical fitness, muscle strength, and body composition including muscle mass, and also data on subjective rating of signs of fatigue. Our interest is also directed to resilience as one of the psycho-social aspects that could be very important for active aging. Based on such data, we constructed a frailty index which is currently being evaluated in terms of determinants and health consequences. The readjustment also resulted in an improved assessment of physical activity by questionnaire data.
