The relationship between breast-feeding and risk for type 2 diabetes of the mother was analyzed within the Potsdam EPIC Study. A history of breast-feeding was associated with a 40 % lower risk for type 2 diabetes in mothers, independent of socioeconomic status and lifestyle factors. The BMI measured at the baseline examination, which took place on average 20 years after the birth of the last child, explained only part of the risk relationship observed. Women who breast-fed longer had on average lower blood lipid levels and higher adiponectin levels, which supports the hypothesis that mothers profit from breast-feeding.
