Department of Pharmacology (PHA)

This department was shut down on March 31, 2013. It was headed by Prof. Dr. Dr. Hans-Georg Joost, who also held the position of scientific director of the institute until May 31, 2014.

The department focused on:

Profile

Field of research

Investigation of the molecular basis of the metabolic syndrome (obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia)

Background

Because of the dramatic increase in incidence and severity, obesity is the most important nutritional disease. Obesity is the main cause of the metabolic syndrome with hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and insulin resistance, and may lead to lifeshortening type-2 diabetes.

The German public health insurances spend at least about 6 billion euro (a third of their budget for prescription drugs) for the pharmacotherapy of the entire syndrome; conservative estimates project a doubling of this amount within the next 5 years. This trend will, if it continues, decrease the average life expectancy, and will cause a severe financial crisis of the public health system.

The development of a novel therapy (drugs or others) is largely facilitated by knowledge as to the molecular mechanism and the pathophysiology of a disease.

Objective

The aim of the department is to investigate the genetic, pathobiochemical und pathophysiological basis of the metabolic syndrome in experimental animals.
