Scientists of the department elucidate the influence of intestinal bacteria on health-related processes in the digestive tract and their role in the development of certain diseases. They also investigate the conversion of food ingredients by intestinal bacteria into preventive metabolites in relation to their effects on human health.
Intestinal bacteria have been implicated in the development of colon cancer and symptoms of the metabolic syndrome. Dietary constituents affect composition and activity of the intestinal microbiota. The mechanisms underlying the interaction of these factors and the ensuing consequences for the host are largely unknown.
We study the role of intestinal bacteria in physiologic and pathologic processes and their modulation by nutrition. In this context we investigate the following topics:
• Formation of cancer-preventive and cancer-promoting metabolites from dietary constituents by intestinal bacteria
• Contribution of intestinal bacteria to the development of the metabolic syndrome
• Molecular mechanisms underlying the interaction between nutrition, intestinal bacteria and host
