Curriculum vitae

Birgit Schröder-Smeibidl studied physics at the University of Bayreuth, where she was awarded a PhD degree with a thesis on the properties of solid materials at extremely low temperatures: “Nuclear specific heat of thallium and nuclear magnetic resonance of AuIn2, platinum and aluminum“.

In September 1993, she took a post-doctoral position at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz under the employment of the Hahn-Meitner Institute Berlin (HMI). In 1995 she joined the scientific staff of the HMI, which merged with BESSY GmbH to the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB) in 2009. Her scientific topics of interest were neutron scattering, magnetism, and neutron autoradiography for art historical research.

As of 1997 she fulfilled different tasks in research management. From 2000 to 2008 she served as academic coordinator for the Scientific Director at HMI, Prof. M. Steiner. As of 2006 she held leading positions in the central infrastructure division, for example, as head of the Department Central Information Technology. From 2006, she headed the Department for Safety, being responsible for occupational health and safety, technical and biological safety, as well as emergency and disaster management. In a dual role since 2008, she led the facilities management division. In this time – and in addition from 2010 onwards also as authorized signatory – she was responsible for many construction and technical projects at both HZB sites, in Berlin-Wannsee and in Berlin-Adlershof.

In November 2016 she assumed the position of Administrative Director at DIfE.
